If a picture is worth a thousand words then the iconic images of photographer Victor Arimondi (www.victorarimondi.net) are an unfinished epic: a tone poem that blurs the boundaries of fashion and art, and delves into realms of the sensual, the celebratory and society’s disenfranchised. In the first major retrospective of the artist’s work since his death from AIDS/HIV in 2001, A Compassionate Eye: The Work of Victor Arimondi explores the incredible breadth of the internationally-acclaimed photographer often compared to – but lesser known than – such contemporaries as Mapplethorpe, and Bianci. The exhibit runs through December 2 at the James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center of San Francisco’s Main Public Library (100 Larkin Street, 3rd Floor). Entrance to the exhibit is free and open to the public.

Part of New York’s heady “pop art” era, Arimondi started as a fashion model before turning the lens on his former life often citing his admiration for the work of Avedon as one of his inspirations. Born in Italy in 1942, it was in Sweden that Arimondi was discovered while working as a laborer. Soon, his rough-hewn beauty made him one of Europe’s most popular regulars in print and on the runway, an experience which led him to his ultimate career. His varied palette and incredible output – with more than 3000 photos -- included male nudes, high fashion treatments, photo montages and later documenting the plight of the homeless and the onslaught of AIDS / HIV. When he died in his adopted home of San Francisco on July 24, 2001, his face and work had graced most of the world’s top fashion publications and several books, now collectors’ items.

“My approach to photography has never been causal,” Arimondi once said. “Since I posed in front of the camera so many years, my experience with talented photographers made me realize a way to express my inner world. My approach to beauty is dominated by my classical background and European style. I came to this country to further develop my style and spirit – I believe that I have been faithful to my ideal.”

Looking to meet more live painters in Philly!

So I'm really interested in collaborating with Philly artists that like to create live performance painting... There are a bunch of artists in NYC that are doing awesome Art Battles (www.artbattles.com) and other live painters all over the country that are creating some really cool stuff as well. I'm hoping to find more like-minded people that are interested in pursuing this style of art. We can paint in all kinds of different venues and approach this concept in many different ways: solo improvisations, live painting competitions, a fine tuned collaboration with multiple artists on one canvas (think an abstract artist that practices with a urban graffiti artist or cartoonist), group consciousness murals, and even super-theatrical painting performances on stage.

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,

We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

ARTISTS:
As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Tuesdays: 8:30 AM-12:00 PM, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Wednesdays: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

1) GET A PORTABLE STUDIO – Keep an art journal with you 24/7/365 as it can
be amazingly affective for you and your work. It is a powerful tool to
access your own personal creative space at the drop of a hat! Most of all it
allows you to hit the studio with out having a formal space that you
physically go to, or when you are away from your formal studio. All in all,
the important thing is that it is your space to have and to hold, regardless
of where you are and what you are doing. You can just connect with that
essential part of you that wants to WORK any time, anywhere.

2) CREATE A COMMUNITY SPACE – All over the globe there are spaces available
for rent. Do some research! Find out from who, what, when and where you can
rent out a space. Then take the space and cute it into 4 separate spaces.
You take one space and rent the other 3 out for whatever your expenses are
(rent, heat, electric). This is a totally positive, exciting way to develop
a free space for yourself and support others who are looking for inexpensive
work space and want to be around other like-minded artists! If you present
yourself to the owner of the space in a serious manner with a clear plan and
a commitment to the project he or she might even create the space for you
and keep your start up costs real low.

3) You can TAKE THIS IDEA and build on it all the way to owning your own
building with studios and a gallery, art café and so on… It has been done
all over the world for many years. Just start small, use your creative mind,
and think "space"! Just keep thinking about it until you make it happen! It
does not take money, it takes time, smarts and the willingness to believe!

Ladies and gentlemen of the art world, we are seeking any and all creative humans who use their skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. That is, we are looking for those whose life is art, and everything they do is DIY. We are searching for those who are creating the Hand-Made Nation. We are calling !ALL! make-believers, dreamers and reality re-arrangers. We are searching hi and low for lowbrow-urban-contemporary-pop-surrealism, pop art, op art, hard-edge, lyrical abstraction, post minimalism, which might be interpreted by some to mean that we are looking only for painters, but that is most definitely not the case. For you see, of course, we need masters of typography, sketchers, illustrators, satirical stencilers, screen printing is way cool, and yes, you too, graffiti fools. Least we forget every culture jammer in the hood. Do you manipulate earth/land/sand/plants/junk into art? Then we have a home for you.

Now, we know some of you may be thinking “What about Dadas’ Dadaists, though?” To this we say, but of course we are calling all inspired by DADA- for where would art be without fluxists, productivism, neoplasticism, pittura, metafisica, arbeitsrat and bauhaus. Well, we are looking for all of “you” from then and now, if any of you still are around. And one may wonder… What about the cubists? We say, “But of course.” Conceptualists? Indeed. Installationists? Please! One might ask if we are seeking anything that might fall under postmodernist modernist who are not distracted by abstractionists and other IST’S. Of course there is always impressionism, post-minimalism, pre-contemporaryism, and expressionism. Are you working in symbolism or surrealism or any of the other -isms that we have not yet mentioned? Well come on out. But wait that’s not all, that could not possibly be all this call for ARTE is all about? Well, Dali you’re right,

This call goes out to all kinetic sculptors, fire sculptors, sound artists bending invisible waves, and video projectionists playing with light. We must invite the minds of the poets and their spoken slam voices, along with improv comedians who mimic the true history of time. Or was that the klown? How can we forget about the klowns! Mimes? Performers “performing” art, puppeteers with their puppets, musicians making sounds. Oh, and least we forget outsider artists wanting to be outside.

In short, we invite all the conceivable movements, modes, and theories of art known to wo/man kind. We say to you, the Artisans of the world who wish to unite because the world needs ART, because the world’s not right. It is time, Your window of opportunity is now. Our space is your blank canvas. Your dreams are our inspiration. You and your art are invited to take part in this epic artistic endeavor.

The world may be going to hell… So let’s make some art.

Illegal Echo / untitled echo finds its origin in an excavation of memory, personal and public, and how in this terrain we can find irrepressible connections in the present world of both movement and images. Integrating dance-theater with photojournalism, the work navigates the intersecting landscapes of peripheral identity, transience and the instability of both body and social standing. To dance a falling line of recall. The distances between myth, allusion, and concrete subject, the missing/searching, outsider/insider, and the internal markers to what is one’s said society or place of origin are dually explored through the medium of dance and visual theatre.

The work contains a diverse landscape of sound from the classical to the urban, from noise to silence, featuring vocalist/indy-musician Odessa Chen and classically trained pianist/new music advocate Kanoko Nishi combined with an assemblage of street/field recordings. It will also feature an image to image dialogue with veteran photojournalist Robert L. Terrell.

In part, this new work has been made from the research, distillation, and trace of a two month movement workshop and impromptu writing engaged with local homeless and formerly homeless individuals here in the SF Bay Area. An extension of this work will be exhibited in the lobby gallery space.

Floor of Sky Projects is supported in part by the Zellerbach family fund and is fiscally sponsored by 21 Grand.

Performed by Glenn Curtis, Leonore Deaton, Christy Funsch, Jennifer A. Minore, Phoenicia Pettyjohn, Noel Rokswel, Sarah Sass, and Skorpio

Inspired by the charismatic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997), To Mifune tells the story of a cowgirl’s (Christy Funsch) journey to meet her samurai idol (Skorpio). The characters for this work are drawn from Mifune’s roles, as well as from roles in acclaimed Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, Stray Dog, and The Seven Samurai. Funsch’s work examines how one’s individuality shifts through interactions with others: movement is borrowed, shared, exchanged, and exaggerated among all of the characters. The protagonist’s idea of who she is changes as her context changes, and by the time she meets the person she thought was her idol, she has come to appreciate the perhaps less grand---though certainly not less admirable---heroics of those she has met on her journey.

Hip-hop DJ K808 mixes live original beats with samples from both Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo and country singer Patsy Montana into a living sound score for the work. The result combines multiple voices with a hip-hop sensibility, which Funsch defines as “an assertion of individuality”. Funsch’s idiosyncratic collection of performers for To Mifune exemplifies her fascination with style as a way of linking the personal with the collective. According to Funsch, “When we create a little truth for ourselves, a way we want to be seen, we are usually seeking empathy. The commonality of this impulse connects us, regardless of the diversity of our movement choices.”

CALL TO LOS ANGELES ARTISTS!

The first of three Barnsdall Arts Markets will occur on Sunday, August 19th 2007 from 11am - 5pm. The event is free for the public to attend, and welcomes those of all ages. The event will take place in the lower parking lot of Barnsdall Art Park, 4800 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90027.

The event will feature a variety of local artists showing and selling their works. It is cosponsored by the Greater Griffith Park Neighborhood Council and presented in cooperation with the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles. The Los Feliz Ledger is the media sponsor and future shows will be held on October 21 and December 16.

There will be over 40 artists exhibiting everything from paintings, sculpture, glasswork, textile art, ceramics, photography, handmade paper goods, wood works and more. The day will also include a family art workshop available at no cost. A variety of light snacks and refreshments will also be available for purchase.

Call for Art ~ the Greenhouse Project

The intention of this work is to recognize and embrace the natural cycles of life, to arrange
our lives in collaboration with natural cycles, and in doing so, we can grow a greener, more
sustainable, integrated, and meaningful experience of our world. The Greenhouse Project
is intended to be an encounter that serves to reconnect and reawaken the participants to
take an active part in the universal, cyclical cycles of life. Through interaction, reflection,
and co-creation, the participants come to encounter themselves as part of the movement of
the Universe. When we awaken to the fact that we are collaborators with nature, we are
more effective in initiating and sustaining beneficial change in our world.

How can you get involved?

Contribute a 4-5 part series or a single piece of art in any medium, and spread the word!
I'm looking for any work that illustrates a natural process, however specifically or broadly
construed. The art could honor the elements, the seasons, any natural cycle involving
plants, water/rain, fire, etc., cycles of life, birth, and death, the passing of time, growth and
decay. Series in all mediums encouraged – paintings, sculptures, photographs, masks,
poems, found objects, natural things (rocks, flowers, plants, feathers) etc. Feel free to run
with it, cuddle with it, expand it, contract it, turn it upside down, inside out, tie it up, set it
free, whatever pleases you the most.

Art contributions made from recycled, reused, and natural materials are highly encouraged.

Other stuff needed:
exotic/tribal fabrics, sheer fabrics/scarves, prayer flags, extension cords, wind chimes, plant
pots, decorative containers, rocks, dried herbs, candles, candleholders, offering bowls,
bells, mirrors, christmas lights, el-wire, and any other miscellaneous items that fit with the
concept and spirit of the project.

Contribute NOW, in time for Flipside (www.burningflipside.com), or after
that, for Bonnaroo and Rainbow Gathering, or even after that,
for Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Play along at home and become a part of
the (r)evolution of this installation in its various incarnations. Stay tuned for a slideshow of

Wikipedia missing "Collaborative Art"

First of all, thanks for you guys being patient with all of the posting that I have been doing on this tribe. I am new to collaborative art and I want to learn as much as I can.

From my study of the history, I was shocked to find limited information ESPECIALLY on Wikipedia. So, I took the liberty to start the documentation of it there.

www.onesimplepixel.com - my first collaborative art project (please help!!!)

On January 1st, 2007, 4AM EST, I launched the one simple pixel project (www.onesimplepixel.com). I Attempting to create one single image, 1000 x 1000 pixels in size, through the collective contributions of 1,000,000 people. Each person chooses one single pixel and personalizes it by giving it a name, choosing its color and optionally a comment or quote for the rest of the world to see. The theories are countless. Many first thought the result will just be a collection of random pixels. However as the image slowly appears it makes one wonder “what will the image actually become?” Only one million people contributing to the one simple pixel project can answer that question.

Let me know what you guys think. If you got any other ideas for pixel projects, please share. Maybe we can collaborate.

Question: Why collaboration?

I am very new to collaborative art, but I believe now that this will be something that I will probably do for the rest of my life. I am just so fascinated with the concept of collaboration in the creation of anything.

My background is computer science and recently business – my day job is research and development. I have been studying the Open Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source) community for years and it is amazing what people have been able to create. So to my question:

Why collaboration, especially in art?

In my opinion, the creation of art by definition is a ‘selfish’ representation. What I mean by ‘selfish’ is that the act is completely focused on conveying and creating something alone – in a sense for yourself OR for yourself to show off others and say “look what I did.” Granted this desire to show off what you have created might be for the greater good to compel people to think, however, it does originate just from you - sort of like my post here 

Anyway, I believe you can have similar motivations in collaborative art, however the difference is that you share the reward.

Personally, I am moving toward doing collaborative art just because I feel this innate desire to work with others for the greater good and understanding. So, am I alone in this perspective? I am crazy?

strange art opportunity

Hello,

I've started to collaborate on a few art pieces with another local artist. We are sort of trading back and forth with work that has been inspired by each other.

The piece I want to send back is a sound piece that is inspired by a found photo he gave me. What I'm going to do is assemble some found sounds and some monolgue over the phone and mix them together in a sound program to create a 2 minute or so piece.

So, what I need is a female to improvise a 30 second (or so) monologue based on three key words which I will provide and to record it on my voice mail.

KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

In one guise or another, religion currently pervades discussion. In a fire fanned by fear of Islam, resorting to religion has become acceptable in the West too.

Faith is back with a vengeance - as a source of certainty and stability, a safe haven, a refuge with its own norms and values, closely connected with the idea of a closed society that is based on tradition and brotherhood.
But what happens when this faith comes in contact with the surrounding world, an open society that is continually changing, based as it is on dialogue among various opinions? Ultimately the separation of church and state is one of the basic principles of Western society, and a globalized world, with its free exchange of goods and ideas, is a source of heresy.

God and Allah, the Vatican and Washington, holy scripture and law books, global and local, love and resentment: The Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007 investigates what happens when faith meets the world around it, where the collisions of different value systems lead to friction.

Act of Faith is an international group exhibition that will be accompanied by a special catalogue. Previous main exhibitions of the festival have drawn enthusiastic responses and are now touring all over the world.

first show was january 27 2004@ Van Kleef's in Oakland.
It was quite a production inluding the queen's concert,
tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter
and the jabberwock monstermasks. twas a mad evening
of fun.
the next was a one man show for an intimate audience
of close friends.
it's third year running was the mad tea party with a book
& c.d. to accompany.
the 4th year is set to be in co-operation with
the lucid dream lounge.
this is the culmination of a lifetimes connection to
the writings of Lewis Caroll,
here was my original Idea :I'ts a glam rock opera,
Spacey sci-fi, I like ziggy style, and kabuki japanese
cats, bunraku, noh theatre. this is a description of
a young lewis caroll, in some fanciful asian opium den,
being served and having the hallucination that he
watered down to create alice's adventures in
wonderland. focusing on the bestiary of "Jabberwok"
, the white rabbit, the tea party, and a god-like
presence of the cheshire (cat).
seeking performers, puppet craft, and hosts for
this would bee epic of psychedelic performance art.
follow thee white rabbit...
the set so far
red queen (an original)
white rabbit(+new verses)
the walrus & the carpenter (to music)
I am the walrus (mutant version)
the humpty dump (mix of humpty dance with parts
of eggman & the original poem)
jabberwocky(grunge version)
to all tomorrows parties
the inverse set also features some surprizes from
the collective of songwriters (the likes of the hobo gobbelins,
sourmash hug band & accordion plague)

AT THE START OF THE SHOW:
white rabbit makes an appearance & then takes us
"through the rabbit hole". when we hit the bottom
a red queen appears: I'm bored to tears with the likes
of you! I declare that there shall be a concert to
amuse me & my royal court."
at this point a page begins calling forth the appointed
acts,
***still looking for quick cabaret style performances
(2-3 songs) which can work with a wonderland style

when it comes time for the hatter to sing,
he does so off key & tempo, so badly that the
queen shouts: "stop him! he's murdering time!!!"
and a guard roughly ejects the hatter from the "stage".
perhaps a bit of mumbling as the court complains
of the hatter's ruination of the concert.
focus shifts to the tea party set.
mad hatter: Oh bugger! they've broken my watch!
march hare: let me see that watch hatter.
(smears it with a thick layer of butter)
that should do the trick.
hatter: (shakes watch & listens) nope, it's still broken
now, we'll be stuck in tea time forever.
dormouse: play us a song hatter, to help us pass the time
hatter plays white rabbit....
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

alice: but if we were to fall down the well,
however should we get back out again?
hare: we shan't be able to get out, we'd be
stuck down there for the rest of time with
nothing but treacol to eat, pass the crumpets
alice: but if the moon could only see
down in the well, I'm certain she...
mouse:...would be so sad that she would cry
an clouds blot out the starry sky
alice: fill the well up with the rain
so we could get back out again!
hatter:..and float down to a salty sea...
hare: where maybe we could look & see
hatter: a bite of something good to eat
hare: a tasty dish!
hatter & hare together: A FISHY TREAT!!
at this point a mock turtle comes in with
a taureen of hot green soup, followed by a
gryphon.
hatter: I say there, mock turtle what's that
you've got?
mock: it is a most beautiful soup! try some
(ladles some into tiny cups passing some to the party)
hatter:delicious!
as the band strikes up the beautiful soup song
the soup service continues.

Audio Tapes Wanted

Hey everyone,
I'm working on a project that requires several hundred audio cassette tapes (yes, those clunky objects that held our music in the days before iPods, CDs and .mp3 players).

I know a lot of people have a stash of old tapes in a box in the basement that they've forgotten about. Why not get rid of the tapes and donate 'em to a good cause?! I will recycle the tapes (via true recycling, not downcycling) and use them as part of my upcoming album.

hi, my names emily. i am currently working on a language/text based project thru the internet, and i need to collect some resources. im not sure what the final outcome of this project will be, but i will definitely keep anyone updated who is interested, and post pictures or something once ive got them.

or something from later, that catches your eye somewhere down the line. do not reference the thing for what it is.
(if its a lamp, dont say "this lamp is blue.")

This October will see the launch of a new eight-week long digital arts
festival, twonotten, and this is your opportunity to be part of it.
Submissions are now being called for from digital artists who wish to
showcase their work. The final venues for the festival are to be
confirmed, although we can announce that the bargate monument gallery
and a number of artvaults in Southampton will be part of the event.

Exhibition submission criteria
Artists or groups wishing to submit work for the exhibition must provide
the following information:
- Current CV, inclusive of an 'artist profile' and email address.
- Written proposal (maximum of 500 words). Tell us about the piece(s)
of work you
are submitting.
- Visual representations (images on CD are preferred, however this is
not
essential).
- The dimensions of your piece(s).
- Any technical requirements / specifications the piece(s) may require
(including equipment needed or equipment being supplied by you). Some
equipment is available, but the organisers welcome the use of artist's
own
equipment for the exhibition.
- £10.00 entry fee per artwork in order to cover administrative and
insurance
costs. Please make all cheques payable to the organiser's 'a space'.
The arts
organisation a space has been actively supporting and exhibiting
emerging
artistic talent for the last five years. In association with their
partners
(cockneydog and ocean pixel), this new platform, twonotten, will
support digital
based practitioners. For more information regarding a space please

- There is no strict format to follow when entering, please submit a

I had an idea on the subway last night. New Years Eve has the enormous potential to be a sychronzizing agent for collective prayer. Please spread the word: New Years Eve 12 am 5 mins before and 5 mins after, please keep a prayer in your mind. At that time, maybe we can all pray for a general common dream like For the Earth to Keep Moving Towards Balance. This can be personalized in any way. I will probably be praying for better stewardship of the environment, and the like. When the clock hits 12, maybe we can all try to connect to each other, realize that we really are all connected, and through this connection change is inevitable. Visualization is key!

BTW Sunday the 4th isn't part of the birthday events, but in addition to the weekly community garden day 2-6, Chi Lai says there will still be more mural work being doen then, if anybody want to come help..

IN the tragic situation which confronts humanity, the hate and the ugliness, the greed and consumerism, the fear of creative meaningful interaction - the fear of touch, feelings, intimacy, vulnerability and receptivity…

We enter the boxing ring. We enter the fight that needs to be fought. We enter the fight for authentic expression in collaboration with another. There are at least two of us and a range of random supplies. We keep fighting for what we feel is aesthetically right while listening carefully to our deepest desires and our collaborators creative moves. We make art together. We do not compromise ourselves and we do not compromise the collective expression. We are in public—letting our creative process be seen and celebrated.

We feel that artists should create with wild abandon in ways that increase the making of beauty everywhere—that spread the experiential knowledge that all of us are creations and are imbued with expressive possibilities yet unheard of.

We are not one brain and not one central nervous system. Human beings are in essence individuals in interaction. Look towards parent and child. Children who are not fed with the receptivity of their mother’s or father’s eyes fail to thrive. Parents who cannot perceive their children’s expressions fail to thrive. So this principle is true for everyone, especially those that call themselves artists. It is in interaction that our potential can be realized.

As a society we fail to thrive—when we fail to interact creatively- when we cant see and feel one another’s authentic expression. When we are not seen for who we really are, life becomes dead. It has become dangerous as evidenced by the plethora of war and destruction everywhere.

We must see each other and we must feel each other and know each other. This is the antidote to war. We must have the courage to see and be seen.

The artists boxing ring is but one format in which this highly creative, dynamic and sometimes-conflictual collaboration can be seen.

We must feel free to steal each other’s ideas. Like we are doing now as we steal phrases from the Russell-Einstein Manifesto of 1955. And it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due. Yet adherence to the ownership of creative material can cut off the very source of creative expression.

We are speaking on this occasion, not as members of this or that nation, continent, or creed, but as human beings, members of the species Man, whose continued existence is in doubt. The world is full of conflicts; wars and mock fights over territory that should be everybody’s, war for whose God is better, for whose worship is better, Wars for fuel so a small percentage of the population can live in metal boxes on wheels so they can sit in traffic and go places. Can we see and feel each other through the metal and smog?

We say the only real fight worth fighting for is creativity itself. So make your boxing ring and bring your friends, relatives and coworkers into the fight.

Take a deep breath, close your eyes or open your eyes, let them be soft and receive what is before you. Open your skin, your nose and ears. Feel fabric, paint, metal, sand, earth, fire, water air and the skin of your collaborators and whatever material surrounds you no matter how far or near. And see what your bodybrain does as it interacts with another. There is no need to plan or plot. Keep staying in the moment, keep being deeply aware and watch what happens.

Do not settle for less than your own aesthetic bliss even in the moment that your collaborator changes all of your dreams. Simply reflect, feel and respond…

Almost everybody who is politically conscious has strong feelings about one or more of these issues; but we want you, if you can, to set aside such feelings and consider yourselves only as members of a biological species which has had a remarkable history, and whose disappearance none of us can desire.

We have to learn to think in a new way. We have to learn to ask ourselves, not what steps can be taken to give military victory to whatever group we prefer, for there no longer are such steps; the question we have to ask ourselves is: what steps can be taken to prevent a military contest of which the issue must be disastrous to all parties? And why bother with all this prevention shit when we can just have fun and make stuff! Why do we buy the oppressive shit?

Many warnings have been uttered by eminent men of science and by authorities in military strategy. We have found that the men who know most are the most gloomy.

Here, then, is the problem which we present to you, stark and dreadful and inescapable: Shall we put an end to the human race; or shall mankind renounce war? People will not face this alternative because it is so difficult to abolish war. Perhaps this is because we are so afraid to be the creative souls that we are. Enter the boxing ring!

There lies before us, if we choose, continual progress in happiness, knowledge, and wisdom. Shall we, instead, choose death, because we cannot forget our quarrels? We appeal as human beings to human beings: Remember your humanity, and forget the rest. If you can do so, the way lies open to a new Paradise; if you cannot, there lies before you the risk of universal death.

Resolution:

WE invite this Congress, and through it the artists and scientists of the world and the general public, to subscribe to the following resolution:

"Society is continually deadened by consumption; the striving for more stuff, the hogging of resources and the ownership of God. We urge the governments and religions of the world to realize, and to acknowledge publicly, that their purpose cannot be furthered by war, and we urge them, consequently, to find peaceful means for the settlement of all matters of dispute.

We wholeheartedly suggest that all engage in the making of beauty—and that the collaboration of the artist boxing ring be a beacon of how fun things could be if we all share in the moment instead of fight over it.

Portland steps

I'm building some big-assed steps that go onto my property in Portland. I invited artists to come-out and smash-up plates, tile, records or CDs and no one bit. So the first step was poured. It's 27 by 32 by nine inches and took 11 60 pound bags of concrete.

The second and third steps have yet to be poured. You are free to smush whatever you want into the steps, provided you arrange to be present when they are poured. If you feel artsy hit me up.

400 Portraits: The Women of Ju?rez

The Situation
Approximately 400 girls and women have been killed in Juarez, Chihuahua,
Mexico, since 1993. Many of the serial victims were sexually assaulted
and mutilated. Although Mexican authorities have numerous suspects in
custody, the suspicious slayings and disappearances continue. Official
corruption and drug cartels are contributing factors. Juarez is a city
of 1.3 million, across the border from El Paso, Texas, rated
sixth-safest city in the United States.
The U.S. government has not gotten involved with the issue, claiming
that it is Mexico’s problem since the crimes have occurred within
Mexico’s borders. The Mexican government also refused to directly face
these atrocities, asserting that this is a U.S. issue because the
factories where many of these women work are owned by U.S. companies.
Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) have stepped in to address the
crisis and put pressure on the U.S. and Mexican governments to take
action.

Taking Action

400 Portraits: The Women of Juarez is an art auction and
awareness-raising event centered on the rape and murder of over 400
women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Our goals are to inform the public about the atrocities that have
impacted the lives of the people of Juarez and the roles of the
non-government organizations, the U.S. and Mexican governments in
addressing the issue, and to motivate people to take action through a
night of eloquent speakers, inspiring music, magnificent dance
performances, and a silent auction of 400 artworks that represent each
of the women who have died in Ciudad Juarez. The proceeds will go toward
Casa Amiga, the sole rape crisis center in Ciudad Juarez, in hopes to
construct a shelter for women and children that have survived, to
provide them a safe haven.

This event is a focused part of a broader struggle to prevent violence
against women and foster compassion and well-being between men and women
of all colors, nationalities, ethnicities, religions, ages, abilities,
and personal identities.

The event will be held on Saturday, May 14th at 7:30PM in the Ackerman
Grand Ballroom on the campus of UCLA.

Join the Campaign

We are seeking artists throughout Southern California to each contribute
a work of art to be auctioned. Interested artists will be given more
background information with hopes of inspiring them to create a work
that embodies the spirit of one of these women and connect with the
issue as a whole.

We are also seeking volunteers and professionals in the Los Angeles
community to contribute their time, effort, and talents to bring this
program to life.

Artists will be asked to bring their artwork, preferably 2-D, and an
easel to display their work the day of the event. Art must be brought to
the Ackerman Grand Ballroom, Level 2 of Ackerman Union at UCLA, by
4:30PM, Saturday, May 14th, 2005, to be set up by the artist. Staff on
site may assist in setup if available, but please arrange transportation
and setup of the art yourself. Easels will be returned to the artists at
the end of the event. We suggest using the metered parking near Ackerman
Union that is available in Lot 6, to park while dropping off the art
(some parking info, more to follow:

All donated art will become the property of the Feminist Majority
Leadership Alliance of UCLA, daughter organization of the non-profit
Feminist Majority Foundation. Proceeds from artwork sales will be

event, thereby releasing property rights back to the artist at the

We are primarily visual arts based (photographers, costumers, textile artists, filmmakers) , but also have writers and musicans in our group. We're looking for other committed artists interested in meeting approx. 3 x per month to give support and share information on resources, venues, and ways of keeping the creative spark alive and kicking.

I made these 35 books, blank on the inside, I screen printed a rough fleshy colored rectangle on the cover. The theme is s k i n. I have been doing mail art for some time now. I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors. Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

How would we go about this?

Collection pages - sent to one or two people, and then collated.
Well, if you can take a picture or buy a postcard of the attraction, and put it on a page with some words of explanation - then the project could be considered to have begun.

Along the way people may be inspired to name the collection, or add anecdotes, or ideas..

The aim would be to have an interesting journal to display at Zeitgeist next year.

Political print designer

I do a lot of electromechanical scuplture and have a new piece called "Angry Burger" which is a bronze casting of an actual hamburger. I've been working on it for a long time and have it functioning so that it actually talks with the buns moving as lips and everything.

It makes people laugh and obviously has a lot of political potential. In the next few months, it will be in a couple of shows and will be spewing appropriate vitriol as the election approaches.

Right now, the stand that it rests on is simply covered by fabric. What I would like to do is to find someone that does print design and would design a cardboard box surrounding the enclosure that it would rest on -- the box doesn't need to support any weight -- just needs to look good.

The box itself would have some sort of simple fast food-style graphics on it and say "Angry Burger" and supplementary text.
